The School of Labor and Industrial Relations is excited to present its second free live web presentation featuring Stacy Hickox to discuss Employment Law: Applications in Human Resources.

Topic Description:
Join us for a webinar that will help you become more familiar with the employment laws you consider every day. This webinar will give an overview of HREtc's new certificate seminar "Employment Law: Applications in Human Resources." In addition, the webinar will cover in depth the question of whether a manager is considered to be exempt and therefore ineligible for overtime under the Fair Labor Standards Act ("FLSA").

The overview of the Employment Law certificate seminar will include Title VII of the Civil Rights Act, the Americans with Disabilities Act (ADA), the Age Discrimination in Employment Act (ADEA), the Family Medical Leave Act (FMLA), the Fair Labor Standards Act (FLSA), the Employment Retirement Income Security Act (ERISA), the Occupational Safety and Health Act (OSHA) and the National Labor Relations act (NLRA). For each of these topics, you will be introduced to the key issues HR managers are facing today.

The FLSA portion of the web presentation will address when a manager is (or isn't) exempt as an executive employee. RadioShack recently agreed to pay out $8.8 million to settle a group of law suits involving a demand for overtime by its store managers because they didn't meet the definition of executive. This webinar will help you sort out whether your managers are or are not exempt as executives.

Participation in this web presentation will earn .5 continuing education credit toward CWCP or CHRS re-certification.

Presenter Info:
Hickox HeadshotStacy Hickox is a visiting assistant professor in the School of Labor and Industrial Relations at Michigan State University (MSU). As an attorney, she practiced in the areas of employment and labor law, including claims of discrimination, unemployment compensation, and wage and hour claims. Before joining MSU, she practiced in the area of disability law at Michigan Protection and Advocacy Service. Ms. Hickox also taught for several years at MSU's law school, including courses in employment law, disability law, and civil rights. She has written a book on the Americans with Disabilities Act and several law review articles on various employment law topics. Ms. Hickox attended the School of Industrial and Labor Relations at Cornell University and received her law degree from the University of Pennsylvania.

In Memoriam - Thomas P. Chuhran

It is with deep regret that the Michigan Self-Insurers’ Association must report a great loss. Mr. Thomas P. Chuhran, former Executive Secretary of the MSIA, has passed away. Mr. Chuhran served as the MSIA’s Executive Secretary for 23 years, from 1978 to 2001.

Funeral Home visitation is Tuesday, February 12, 2008, from 6:00 p.m., to 9:00 p.m., and Wednesday from 2:00 p.m. to 9:00 p.m. The funeral home is Trenton Chapel-Martenson Family of Funeral Homes, 3200 West Road, Trenton, Michigan. Tom will lie in state Thursday 9:30 a.m. at First Presbyterian Church of Trenton until the time of service at 10:00 a.m. Interment is at Michigan Memorial Park Cemetery. Memorial contributions may be made to Karmanos Cancer Institute or Bethesda Teaching Ministry.
